Why should you participate in the Los Angeles County Regional Occupational Program (LACOROP)?
Who Should Enroll
Our Mission The Los Angeles County Regional Occupational Program is a collaborative of the Los Angeles County Office of Education and member Districts to deliver quality career preparation. OUR VISION
Our Program LACOROP is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and is governed by the Los Angeles County Board of Education. In cooperation with twenty-three school districts, LACOROP determines and meets both the career objectives of students and the labor market needs in Los Angeles County. District steering committee representatives provide direction for LACOROP programs operated within their schools. LACOROP partners with business representatives who participate on advisory committees to assure that occupational courses are based upon needs of the business or industry and to provide students with on-the-job training. LACOROP also works with private post-secondary schools, community college districts, labor organizations, and employment agencies to help us deliver our mission. Funding & Attendance LACOROP's operating funds are supplied by the State of California based on average daily attendance (ADA) to the programs, operated by schools and community sites. The established revenue limit provides an average training cost of $4.00 per student hour. Our Success Story The Regional Occupational Program is acknowledged as one of the most cost-effective job training program for high school students and adults in California. LACOROP graduates entering the labor force have made a tremendous impact on the economies of their communities. In 2008, students completed LACOROP classes in 57 different occupational areas and 94% of the students were found to be in school, in the military, and/or working. Just as important, students who complete ROP courses have a better chance of graduating from high school. In 2008, 99% of approximately 26,000 12th grade ROP completers also graduated from high school. CLASSROOM SETTINGS ROP classes are designed to provide academic studies and hands-on training in entry-level job skills. The classes may be conducted either as classroom-only, community classroom, or cooperative vocational education courses.
ADDITIONAL GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING SERVICES In addition to providing guidance during the enrollment process, ROP counselors are available to assist the student with career interest surveys, career research, information, and goals. JOB INFORMATION SERVICES In addition to the job training skills that are learned in the classroom, students will learn how to advance on the job with work maturity skills, complete job applications, develop a resume, promote themselves with confidence in the job interview, network with others to obtain the job of their choice, and be introduced to the Personal Career Portfolio and Job Finders Guide concepts. TRANSPORTATION In most cases, students are required to provide their own transportation to ROP classes. NOTICE OF NON DISCRIMINATION The Los Angeles County Office of Education and unified school districts do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, language, ancestry, or marital status in their educational programs and activities or employment practices. The LACOROP encourages gender equity in students' selection of ROP courses and/or programs, career choices, and personal decisions. All of these categories are protected by the following legislation: Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Education Code of the State of California. Students who have questions or concerns about the non-discrimination policy can contact the LACOROP's Assistant Director of Support Services. STUDENT GRIEVANCES All LACOROP students have the right to a prompt and equitable means of seeking an appropriate resolution for any alleged violation of his or her rights by an employee of LACOROP or its participation school districts. The rights protected under this intent include, but are not limited to, those guaranteed by the established rules and regulations of LACOROP, the Education Code of the State of California, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Information regarding students's grievance rights may be obtained from the LACOROP's Assistant Director of Support Services. NOTICE OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT Harassment on the basis of sex is a violation of an individual's civil rights. It is the intent of the LACOROP to provide an educational environment free of sexual harassment. The LACOROP strongly disapproves of any conduct that constitutes sexual harassment and will take disciplinary measures to ensure compliance. All complaints will be investigated and appropriate action taken. Complaints should be reported to the local school district's ROP administrator or LACOROP's Assistant Director of Support Services.
